VisionDuties of Students' Counseling Unit

Students' Counseling Unit introduces two types of services for students; these are social guidance and academic advising, as follows:

First: Academic advising: it aims to help students academically by informing them with the basic rules of their study and exams included in the Higher Education Counsel system. These rules are:

  • Informing and guiding students academically by preparing three basic programs every academic year. These are:
  • The orientation program for new students. It is held during the first week of the first semester of every academic year. It is a comprehensive program prepared to guide and inform students about everything related to their study.
  • Guidance program for preparatory year students. It is held during the first week of the second semester every year. It aims to discuss the main issues and difficulties students faced during the first semester in a try to solve these problems.
  • Guidance program for students to choose their specialization. It is held two weeks before the final exams of the last semester for students. This is done in coordination with the academic advisors and the departments of the university.
  • Distributing students to academic advisors after making sure that these advisors are able to help students i.e. informing and guiding students academically to be aware of the university system. In addition, helping academically poor students and putting a timetable for meeting them.
  • Supervising academic advisors, following their work and the results they achieved.
  • Holding scheduled academic awareness campaigns in order to overcome any obstacles might face students and finding the best ways to raise their academic level.
  • Advertising, continuously, about the programs of the Counseling Unit and motivating students to visit the Unit to monitor the relation between the students and their advisors.
  • Preparing a detailed report about every program or activity and sending it to the Dean and to the Unit of publishing after approving.
  • Preparing a semestral report about the achievements and the obstacles faced and suggestions to solve these problems. The report is introduced to the dean before the end of each semester.

Second: Social Counseling: It aims to help students who are having difficulties and problems as a result of their exposure to the conditions of social or financial difficulties or behavioral troubles with their surroundings and the like, which may lead to a negative impact on the academic status of the student and worsening the problem. The Unit of Student Counseling deals with these problems to find the best and the most appropriate solutions, including:

  • Talking to students individually and discussing the problem and its dimensions and impact on the academic status of the student.
  • Finding the best ways to solve students' problems, advising them and finding the best ways to overcome their problems. Moreover, contacting the guardian of the students, their teachers, academic advisors and those concerned. This happens with the consent of the students, if possible, and guiding other cases to the dean to handle.
  • Cases that require financial support are forwarded to the management of the deanship.
  • Documenting records of all cases that illustrate the details of the problem, actions taken and the results.
  • Taking into account the privacy and confidentiality of information given by the student.
  • Identifying different times over the week to receive interested students in Counseling Unit programs.
  • Preparing a semestral report about the achievements and the obstacles faced and suggestions to solve these problems. The report is introduced to the dean before the end of each semester.

Basic Programs Introduced by the Unit

The students' Counseling Unit introduces three programs for preparatory students at fixed and specified intervals during the first and the second semester as follows:

1. The orientation program for new students.

It is held during the first week of the first semester of every academic year. It is a comprehensive program prepared to guide and inform students about everything related to their study. It includes lectures, meeting with officials at the deanship, distributing the orientation file which includes a study guide, services guide introduced by the deanship, and more.

2. Guidance program for preparatory students

It is held during the first week of the second semester every year. It aims to discuss the main issues and difficulties students faced during the first semester in a try to solve these problems.

3. Guidance Program for selecting specialization

It is held two weeks before the finals and continues for a week. It aims to inform students with the available majors at the university. This is usually done by holding meetings and lectures. The program is accompanied by interdisciplinary exhibition at the university colleges (a specific day for each college). Officials answers students' questions and help them choose the suitable specialization according to their abilities and the market needs.

Programs and activities provided by the Unit:

  • Guidance program services

The Unit provides a group of daily guiding services that help students get over problem they may face in their study and enhance excellent students. The Unit provides other services in several areas to elevate the character of the students academically, intellectually and morally. Among these services: individual guidance, group guidance, individual Counseling, case study, following-up students academically and especially the poor ones. This may happen in the Unit or inside the classes.

  • Adviser student/team

The program aims to form a pilot group of students distinguished morally, scientifically and have a strong set of personal characteristics such as: leadership, self-esteem, desire to volunteer work, communication skills, cooperation and teamwork, in order to provide guidance and advice to fellow students and work effectively with the Unit of Student Counseling through participation programs and activities of the Unit.

A smoke-free Campus

An awareness program hosted by the Unit of student Counseling in all campuses of the preparatory year and in cooperation with the Clinic of anti-smoking at the Directorate of Public Health in northern border region and the participation of its officials. The programs aimed to free the students from smoking and informing them with its dangerous effects under the slogan (A smoke-free Campus). The program includes a photo gallery and documentaries. It also includes tools and brochures from anti-smoking clinic in addition to lectures and meetings of officials at the clinic with students in order to make them aware of the dangers of smoking.

Life skills development program

The program is one of the most important programs of the Counseling Unit. The program includes training courses related to like skills of the students. The program aims to refine students' characters socially and academically to help them handle the pressure of life easily and adapt with the university and social life.

The Unit arrange for a program for failing students in all campuses of the university. The program includes several guiding sessions held during the semester. The program aims to raise the academic level of those students.

Courses about skills development of crises management and psychological pressure

The program is held during the second half of the second semester. The Unit of Counseling hosts third-secondary students from all schools of the northern border. The program aims to orient students with the university system, the mechanism of admission, in addition to the activities presented by the university and the advantages students may obtain. By this, students will like to apply for the university as soon as they graduate from school.
